Saturdays are ideal for exploring and one of my favorite things to do on a Saturday afternoon in New York City is to visit the many vibrant art galleries Gotham has to offer.

#gallerysaturdays is an ongoing series that will highlight artful outings...

Gregory Crewdson

"Cathedral of the Pines"

Photographer Gregory Crewdson's latest exhibition in Chelsea is hauntingly fantastic.

The New York Times cites an "absence of narrative closure" in this series, which really adds to the curiosity and longing of Crewdson's work. Everything in the subject matter is open-ended; it's hard to tell where the stories begin and where they end, or if they have beginnings or endings at all.

Scenarios are purposefully and beautifully staged, drawing the viewer in and then ultimately leaving us completely unsatisfied. Equally as striking is the photographer's heavy use of highlights and shadows, emphasizing and even adding to an already surrealistic quality.

If the style feels vaguely familiar, you might know Crewdson's one and only commercial piece, which you can have a peek at: here.

Gagosian Gallery

Through March 12

Robert Melee

"Semi-Quasi-Bower Recreational"

'Trianwreck' is an appropriate phrase to describe this show-- in a good way.

I stumbled upon this exhibition not having any idea what I was about to see and the circumstances couldn't have been better. The level of camp was turned up to 11 million.

Whenever anything is this overt, you know something is amiss. There's something truly dark about the celebration happening here. It's messy, chaotic, and a little frightening. All in good fun?
