Black Seed Bagels

The best bagels in NYC are... Canadian.

Although this bready bad-boy traditionally has its origins in Poland, bagels are undoubtedly synonymous with New York City. It seems like there is a different bagel shop on every corner here and it makes perfect sense, as the more savory cousin of the donut is a simple grab-and-go meal that is both filling and takes on innumerable incarnations. Although each deli and bagel-maker in NYC claims to have the O.G. stamp on bagels, it is the left-of-center Black Seed Bagels-- who fashion a "New York-Montreal hybrid" style-- that consistently wins me over again and again.

What sets Black Seed apart from others in the roundup (get it? roundup?) is their unique recipe and preparation. They roll their doughy goodness by hand, boil the batches in honey water, and cook them in a wood-fired oven. Apart from the usual bagel and schmear, the menu also includes an amazing selection of signature sandwiches. My hands-down favorite is the #12: Wood Fired Baked Eggs, Cheddar, and Bacon-- I'll find myself consuming one of these sandwiches at least once a week. A close second on the list is the #14: Smoked Turkey, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, & Honey Mustard. The turkey on this sandwich is from Black Seed co-owner Noah Bernamoff's other restaurant, Mile End Delicatessen, and it can't be beat.

Throw in coffee by Stumptown Roasters along with an incredibly entertaining and dedicated staff that never ceases to make you feel at home and Black Seed Bagels will keep you coming back for more.
