Another ongoing quest for me is the search for excellent pain au chocolat. Not to sound like every snob who has ever been to Paris, but there is this one place in the 20th Arrondissement in that city... blah, blah, blah... you know the rest. Everyone has the same story.

In the United States, French pastry runs the gamut from awful to 'oh wow, this is pretty good!' I've tried a lot and leave it to the French import Maison Kayser to win over my chocolate croissant heart.

French baker Éric Kayser opened his first bakery in Paris in 1996 and found immediate success. Now, over 80 different Maison Kayser bakeries span the globe. My favorite NYC location is the one on Christopher Street. The staff here provides the perfect mix of warmth and sass. If I'm feeling extravagant, I'll have an order of scrambled eggs with my flakey treat. Otherwise, an espresso and a pain au chocolate is the perfect grab and go.

If you can get one of these pastries fresh out of the oven, then you're really in for something special. I haven't had a bad one from here yet, however, so you're safe picking one up anytime.
